July 20th Mt. Shasta City, CA - Susanville...133...6,845’

Day 13 was a 133 mile ride that started out very cold. This day was in California all day. We were basically on one road for the entire day. We started at the back again. We were not very good at getting up early and getting ready. In general it was OK but this day we also had issues with flats. This was the third day in a row that we have had issues that put us DFL. This time it was Aaron that had the flat. The first flat took a while to fix because his spare tube also had a flat and he tried to use a patch kit that did not work. I put in my only spare tube and we continued on for 20 more miles before it went down again. This time he spent more time looking at the tire and found a very tiny wire that was putting holes in the tubes. We were finally moving. This was one of the longest days on the trip. There were tons of trucks passed us on the road but we generally had a good shoulder to ride on. Lunch was at the top of a large climb that really made lunch spectacular. Susan left her lunch on a picnic table and a chipmunk helped himself to her salad. It was pretty funny. We finished in the heat of Susanville CA. There were not many great options for dinner that night but we found a local diner by the hotel that was not bad. We then walked down to the Starbucks so Aaron could get his Latte. It was another beautiful day despite Susan telling us that the tour really should have ended in Mt Shasta. She said the last 2 days were a race to the airport in Reno. One day left.
