PACTour Pacific Crest

July 21, 2012

July 21th Susanville, CA - Reno, NV...90...4,280’

Day 14 was our final day that would take us from California to Reno Nevada. We were warned that it would a boring day with terrible heat but it turned out to be a nice day of riding. We had a nice group picture after breakfast and then everyone started riding. It was the closest that everyone had started together even though we somehow managed to be one of the last to leave again. From the start I rode hard. I hooked up with Tom and Michael and we had a great pace line trying to chase down the lead riders. It was a blast. We finally caught the 3 riders at the front (Kirsten, John and Tom) and we sat in with them to create a nice 6 person pace line. This got us to the first stop in record time. We let the 3 front riders leave first, then Tom, Michael and I started our chase again. Just as they started to come into view on the road a train passed us on the tracks next to the road. Then our road crossed over the tracks and we had to stop. The 3 leaders had made it through before the train got there. Fortunately the road crossed the tracks again in another mile and they got stopped. We pushed to chase them down and went by quickly this time. John jumped on and we continued to push hard until the second stop of the day. This stop was at 51 miles and we had averaged 21.4 mph. It was a blast. The next section I rode with Tom to lunch at a brisk pace but just talking the whole time. Right before lunch I had a bug run into my neck and crawl down into my jersey. I decided to kill it but then I felt the slight sting. I quickly unzipped my jersey and let bee go before he buried his stinger into me. Lunch was at a very small zoo on the outskirts of Reno. At this stop Aaron showed up so we rode our last section together. The temperatures started to climb to about 95 but it could have been much hotter. It was a great trip and I would love to do another trip with PAC Tour again.
