October 6: Taxes

10:50pm

So much for my social life. This is just going to be a horrible week because I didn't manage to get any studying done on the weekend, once again. I went to a dinner/social event deal for Ernst&Young on Sunday night. That lasted three hours. I learned a bit more about what it means to be an auditor at a large public accounting firm, but I am not sure it was worth the time commitment. I spent the rest of the night working on the project of the week.

I have a cool group for this project, but the work just sucks. We are preparing a tax return for a small corporation. It is a simplified version of what companies have to do every year, and it is a pain. The instructions estimate that learning about the form for the first time should take about forty hours. Actually preparing it should take about seventy. It is nice that they put that little "Paperwork Reduction Act Notice" at the beginning of the form.

Still thinking about whether I want to go to this career fair in Boston. It is a bunch of Japanese firms looking for Japanese people who are studying abroad in America. They don't really want people like me who can speak English, but can only fake Japanese. Besides, I don't think I could handle the hierarchy of a Japanese corporation. Accounting firms are stifling enough.

I was a little excited by the travel opportunities offered at Deere and Co. They have factories all over the world, so I could travel some. I also heard that Disney sends their internal auditors abroad a lot. They have to verify controls and whatnot in all of their subsidiaries. It may not be stimulating work, but I could travel.

So that is the report for today. I can't wait to get my accy exam back tomorrow. We are all going to be crying. Two more exams next week too...
