January 20: First Day of Class

10:40am

It os a classic first day of class here at the University. Not only is it always cold and snowing on the first day of spring semester, but there are always other random problems due to the fact that lots of people didn't plan ahead. Yes, it is the computer labs. Nothing is working at half of the labs on campus because a bunch of machines were rebuilt incorrectly last night. CCSO also rewired a bunch of labs and moved some servers around over the break. Some of the stuff was done at the last minute as usual, and now things are a mess.

My first class was pretty cool though. Protest in Modern Literature or something like that. The professor is a German woman who seems to really know her stuff when it comes to German literature and the general history of the world. We talked about lots of "ism's" for the first day. It was very enlightening to relearn all of these important movements that I can never keep track of due to the fact that I am always cramming accounting information into my brain. Anyway, I would like to stick with this class in order to "study my German roots" and also become a little more well-read.

But it will be quite a balance with my CPA review studies. I am really dreading this task. All the statistics show that I should be able to pass this exam in May if I apply myself a little. I am not sure if I want to though. I kind of have a lot of bad karma going with fellow accounting students. I somehow just don't fit in with the other students these days. I talked to an old accounting friend who is working at Andersen now (started yesterday). He suggested that I find one good study partner. While I may not get along with many of the people, I need at least one good ally to help me through this study hell.

I sent off another round of packages this morning. I was proud of myself for getting up in time to make it to the post office. Heck, I even had time to shave this morning. I guess it is because I start at 9am instead of 8am this term. Anyway, it kind of makes me feel good to send a few things around to people, because I know that they will be happy to get something in the mail.

I have noticed that I use the phone a lot lately to cheer myself up too. If I am bored or lonely (like last week when nobody, including my roommate, was in town), I call an old friend or relative who may live in San Francisco, Tokyo, Chicago, wherever. It is definitely easier and easier to do as long distance charges get cheaper. I think a lot of people are moving farther away, but they are keeping in touch better and better. I am not sure if this is good from a social/psychological standpoint, but I often use the phone as my own kind of therapy. Hey, we all have our own problems, eh?

Well, that exciting CPA Business Law class is about to start. Oh, in other news, the room that I used to live in at Newman Hall was blown-up in some wacky arson over the weekend. Kinda scary. Lots of other bad news from all over the world too. Have to find some happy thoughts soon.
