February 22: Death by Hanging

2:30pm

Once again, not to worry, that is just the name of the wacky Japanese movie that I saw this week. It was even better than Double Suicide. It was this wacky story about how the Japanese officials are confused when a guy is giving the death penalty. They hang him, but he doesn't die, so they can't decide if they should hang him again. They argue over his case and the circumstances and everything. It makes it more confusing because Mr. R. is a Korean living in Japan. He is Catholic, so there is a priest present at the execution too. It turns out that the officials and priest know more about rape and battery than the criminal himself. Very strange.

But isn't that how life is?

I have gotten some feedback on all of my classes now. I have a chance at getting all A's which would be pretty amazing. I am still asking myself why I would want to get good grades anymore. Shouldn't I just enjoy life a little and only learn enough to get by? Yai was telling me this story about a blind person she saw. She said it inspired her to use her abilities to their fullest (or something like that). It is kinda like the old protest work ethic thing: God gave you a gift... Anyway, my problem is not using my gifts. I mean, there are not many people who just sit around and do nothing. The question is, what kind of productivity is productive. Traveling around the world is productive. You use your legs, eyes, ears, senses to interact with other people and other environments. However, some people would say that this kind of busyness has little merit, because you are not producing anything. Productivity without product.

I think my journal here is really going downhill. I don't know that it was ever at the top of any hill, but anyway. Maybe the rigors of preparing for the CPA exam are just draining me of the ability to think clearly on other subjects.

Let's see what else there is to report this fine day. I was rather productive yesterday. I spent my morning helping out with the inventory at the food coop. I am supposed to work there one hour per week, so it was not exactly volunteer work, but I felt good about it anyway. Then in the afternoon, I went to the local public library to help people with their taxes. That was quite a chore. I spent two full hours computing a woman's taxes from start to finish. I got a little confused on the capital gains part, but generally it was good practice. I am not sure how often I will go back for that work though. It was more stressful than actual homework and studying.

Well, my replacement is early again today, so I better go. I have to get some studying done tonight so that I am not totally drowning this week. Another CPA quiz/test on Saturday. Till next time...
