It's official. Police women in Tokyo can now wear culottes. the Yomiuri Shimbun said today, "Female uniformed officers have been obliged to wear skirts since 1957, but the [Metropolitan Police Department] has changed the dress code in part this summer, requiring women stationed at 12 locations that require frequent work on the streets to wear trousers or culottes. According to the MPD, the change was made on an experimental basis as a sharp increase in serious crime may require female uniformed officers to perform a wider range of duties in the future, including the pursuit of suspects." In other news, I listened to Paul Harvey this morning, who had something quite interesting to say; "In over-populated Japan today, low-hormone dosage birth control pills were introduced to the market." Interesting way of phrasing, I thought. I have started writing letters to some of the first year students. It is fun, and I get some really cute stuff from them, but boy does it tire me. One girl in particular, Kaori, has become my primary pen pal. The problem is, she is over anxious about my replies. She has come to my desk, asking for the next letter. Sometimes I try to avoid her. I just can't write a letter in Japanese every day. Plus, I usually have a couple other letters to which I must respond. To make my life even more difficult, a few of these letter writers are in the brass band club. I have been to the club a few times, and these girls want me to come every day. NO WAY. Nothing is that exciting, especially if I only watch. These girls have only been playing their instruments since April, so they are not very good. Can you imagine sitting through 2 hours of half-hearted practice every day? I can, and that is why I don't go. I try to divide my time among all the clubs, but it is difficult. You future JETs who are reading this, take my advice and beware of befriending the students! They are great kids, but most AETs don't have enough of themselves to go around. Only show up at club activities once in a while, unless you want to be a regular "member." So that is the news from Ota. Valerie |
